Procedure of Storage
To avoid any damage to the wooden frames caused by the weather or the location of the house and its exposure to intense sunlight, humidity, very high or very low temperatures, salinity, etc., DAUWIN® chooses its door & window frames from anti-adhesive timber (plywood) laminated in three layers (three pieces of wood glued opposite to each other) and three different industrially processed types of wood: Meranti, Pine and Oak.
The wood, from the time it is received until it is used, is kept in specially designed storage areas with regulated humidity and temperature that maintain it in excellent condition for processing. By properly preparing the storage rooms, the properties of wood are enhanced and the wood reinforced so it can successfully withstand under adverse conditions.
Ecological Consciousness
By purchasing wood products, not only we do not contribute to the destruction of the forests, but we also help in their preservation and expansion.
Deforestation, that is the total felling of trees that systematically occurred in the second half of the 20th century and the subsequent destruction of vast forest areas, has led to an organized combating of the problem by international forest protection organizations that implement, verify and certify rules of sustainable management (the management of natural resources in a way that ensures their sustainable use without causing irreversible damage to the environment). These organizations - the two main ones are F.S.C. (Forest Stewardship Council) and P.E.F.C. (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) - are working closely with states or groups of states towards the compliance with the international rules and conventions, the preservation of biodiversity and the enrichment of the natural resources. As part of this sustainable development, wood products manufactured today come from a legitimate - certified source from forests, which are planted with the same amount of timber that is being removed or with an even greater one. So today, the majority of the millions of cubic timber traded in the world market is certified and produced by millions of respectively certified woodlands.
Properties of Wood
The properties of wood, especially those concerning thermal insulation, but also sun protection, its resistance to knocks and misuse and primarily its upgraded aesthetic image make it a material that is extremely popular and dear to a large portion of the buying public. Despite its significantly higher cost compared to the plastic or aluminum frames, the wooden frames have still fanatic supporters, because wood enriches aesthetically the buildings in which it is implemented.
In Greece, wood in all its applications (wooden doors, wooden shutters, wooden window frames) has been the basic construction material for centuries in urban, island, mountainous and semi-mountainous areas, partially defining the landscape architecture, too. Today, the wood processing techniques, both in the construction and maintenance, have enhanced its properties and benefits whenever this is chosen.
Coating of Wood
The detachment of paint from wood, known as “cracking” or “peeling”, has always been the main problem of wooden frames that constantly needed to be maintained, scrubbed and re-painted to successfully remove its cause and to avoid corrosion of wood resulting to irreparable damage. The reasons that would lead to a minimum life of the paint and the subsequent damage to the wood were found on the quality of the varnishes which would allow moisture to pass into the wood and be trapped inside.
Nowadays, paints are well advanced in relation to the past; they are reliable, ecological and, from an aesthetic point of view, cover a vast variety of colors and shades. The significant diversification of the paints in comparison with the past lies in their chemical composition, since most of them are water soluble, i.e. water is used as solvent and not chemicals, such as polyurethane.
SIGMA paints which are used by DAUWIN® meet all the requirements of modern paints – different shades of wood and RAL colors making it possible to have a different color on the exterior and the interior. The ecological and water-soluble paints are available in an impressive range of colors, while the methods of their application - impregnation and wax - protect the wood from mold, thereby allowing it to breathe and making it water resistant.
New Methods of Coating
New methods of coating deal effectively and successfully with the penetration of the color in the inner layers of the timber, by covering completely and correctly all smooth or curved surfaces, while at the same time minimize the waste caused as a by-product of the coating process.
The two modern methods, namely robotic spray and electrostatic, achieve excellent results, enhancing the strength of wood even, when it is exposed to extreme conditions. Their implementation requires a highly organized paint shop that is technologically equipped and can achieve excellent aesthetic results.
